22/07/2010 - Candlelight Sponsors Cycling Challenge
Candlelight is proud to be sponsoring two local lads from Somerset who are facing the gruelling challenge of cycling from Lands End to John O'Groats to raise money for Mendip Community Transport, so that they can buy a much needed new mini bus.
James Catley-Day (the son of Candlelight's proprietor) and William Harvey have set themselves a real endurance test. They plan to do the bike ride in 10 days and this is remarkable for a number of reasons; both boys will ride the entire 977 miles, there will be no sharing of miles PLUS they are attempting to average nearly 100 miles per day with no rest day!
James, who lives in Kingweston, near Somerton, has close links with the elderly and infirm as his mother is a co-founder of Glastonbury-based Candlelight Homecare Services.
He said: “We are young, fit and healthy and can go almost where we like and do what we like, within reason, and we felt we had to do something to help less fortunate people who depend on others to get them around.”
James and his close friend Will Harvey, from Bourton, hit on the idea of the sponsored ride when they were chatting in the school library and they have been gearing up for their marathon ride by cycling up to 200 miles a week.
“If we can raise money towards a new bus so people can get out and about and enjoy their lives more, it’s the least we can do, said James.
Their fundraising target is £3,000 and together with sponsorship and donations they have raised over £2,000 so far, with more to come in.
They set off from Lands End on Saturday 17th July and you can follow their progress on their blog: http://www.jamesandwilliamblog.blogspot.com
They also have a webpage where people can donate towards this fantastic effort: http://www.justgiving.com/JamesandWilliam
All of us at Candlelight wish them the very best of luck and look forward to welcoming them home.
